Training with us

Many of our lawyers started their careers with us, completing a course of on-the-job training and supervision called an Articled Clerkship after graduating in law.

In 2008, the Victorian Government made changes to the legislation governing the formal training requirements for law graduates to a system of traineeship.

Under this new scheme, law graduates may complete a 12-month Graduate Traineeship with a legal firm, working under the supervision of a legal practitioner (in effect, an Articled Clerkship by another name) but at the same time must complete training in the “Competency Standards for Entry Level Lawyers” developed by the Law Admissions Consultative Committee and the Australasian Professional Legal Education Council.

During their 12 months of Graduate Training, law graduates must acquire appropriate understanding and competence in each of the compulsory ‘Skills’, ‘Practice Areas’ and ‘Values’. The Graduate Trainee is also expected to complete one practice area from each of two groups of optional practice areas.

Following the completion of Graduate Training, the Graduate Trainee can apply to the Board of Examiners for admission to practice.

Traineeships with RCT and Stringer Clark:
it’s often the non-legal that matters the most

We take our training and mentoring responsibilities very seriously. We recognise that legal talent has to be nurtured and supported, with ready access and counsel from within the senior ranks of the firm.

Our culture is based on respect and helping people achieve their best. It is the same ethic that imbues our client relationship. A respect for a person’s interests and how they feel.

So while our Graduate Trainees get the best legal brains and technical legal training, they also benefit from learning how to treat clients – to understand more than simply the legal issues at stake and keep in mind the client’s personal needs.

We are also there to help Graduate Trainees deal with situations that sometimes may be challenging or stressful.

It is about creating a culture based on a fully-rounded experience and learning.
